Fun Runs in Melbourne During Autumn 2015

Fun runs in Melbourne during Autumn 2015

Okay, so some of you may argue that there’s no such thing as a fun run.

But a fun run can be a great way to increase your fitness and strength. You’ll have something to aim more (great for keeping you motivated), you’ll challenge yourself (especially if you’ve never done one before), and at the end of it you’ll have something to show for it (medals! Tshirts!).

Autumn is a great time to take part in an organised event. The weather is cooling down so you don’t have to worry about sweltering in the heat, but the days are still long enough that you can fit in an after-work training run while it’s still light.

There’s heaps of runs around Melbourne. We’ve highlighted a few of them to explore. And if you’re keen, why not chat to a few other members at Liberty Fitness about organising a team – because everything’s more fun in a group.

The Swisse Colour Run | 1st March 2015

Billed as the Happiest 5K on the Planet, the colour run is less run and more fun. You’ll jump, skip and jog your way around a 5 kilometre course, while volunteers pelt you with coloured powder.

At the end of the run, you’ll be treated to a big, crazy colourful dance party with all your other runners.

This is a great event for a group of friends, or as an easy introduction to organised runs. Don’t expect to get any Personal Bests in this event – it’s all about having a blast.

Tough Mudder | 21st and 22nd March 2015

Yeah, so you know how we said runs could be fun. We’ll the only time you’ll be having fun in this event is when you cross the finish line, exhausted but exhilarated.

Tough Mudder is part endurance run, part obstacle course, with a smidgen of the mad thrown in for good measure (did someone say electric wire?).

You’ll run around a 20 mile obstacle course, while conquering three-metre-high walls, jump into freezing ice baths, crawl through mud, run through fire and get shocked by 10,000 volts of electricity.

You’ll not only physical strength and endurance, but also mental grit, determination and camaraderie. But it’s all for a good cause, with money being raised for the Legacy Foundation.

The Great Train Race | 3rd May 2015

Ever wanted to race a train? Okay, so not just any train. You’ll be racing one of the oldest working steam locomotives in Australia up a picturesque mountain in the Dandenong Ranges.

This 13.2km event is also one of the longest running ‘Fun Runs’ in Australia. Each year over 3,000 runners compete to beat Puffing Billy in a race that runs from Belgrave station to Emerald Lake Park.

It’s all in good fun. When the starter’s gun goes, the train driver runs from the starting line to the drivers seat and the steam train begins the slow journey up the mountain, filled with family and friends of the racers.
